Tough-luck Nakano set to retire

Kyodo News

Figure skater Yukari Nakano is set to hang up her skates, sources said Wednesday.

Her coach Nobuo Sato confirmed that Nakano, who will join Fuji Television Network Inc. this spring, will retire. A press conference will be held in the coming days.

Nakano, 24, narrowly missed a spot on the Japanese Olympic team for the second time in a row when she lost a tight race to Akiko Suzuki for an Olympic spot, finishing third behind Mao Asada and Suzuki at the national championships.

She has also pulled out of the world championships getting under way in Turin on March 23, citing a groin injury. Suzuki will take her spot.
