MAEBASHI, Gunma Pref. (Kyodo) Hiroyuki Ono pulled away in the seventh leg as Nissin Food Products won its first national corporate ekiden championship on Friday.
Nissin completed the seven-leg, 100-km road relay in Gunma Prefecture in 4 hours, 50 minutes, 07 seconds, finishing the race 29 seconds clear of Konica Minolta. Last year’s winner Fujitsu finished third in 4:51:37.
Yuki Sato gave Nissin the lead after winning the third leg and although Satoru Kitamura could only manage third in the fourth leg, strong runs from Kosaku Hoshina and Ono in the fifth and seventh pulled Nissin through.
Chugoku Electric Power placed fourth in 4:52:26 while Asahi Kasei, third in last year’s race, could only manage eighth.
