Top favorite Vodka held off a late charge by Oken Bruce Lee to claim a record-equaling seventh Grade One win at the Japan Cup on Sunday.
With French jockey Christophe Lemaire aboard, Vodka shot clear with a devastating turn of pace down the stretch and held on to clinch victory by a nose at Tokyo Racecourse.
Vodka, the first Japanese mare to win the Japan Cup, crossed the line in 2 minutes, 22.4 seconds to earn ¥250 million in prize money. Red Desire finished 1 1/2 lengths behind second favorite Oken Bruce Lee for third place.
Vodka paid ¥360 on a ¥100 bet.
