KYOTO – Queen Spumante produced a bold front-running display to upset top favorite Buena Vista and win the Queen Elizabeth Cup on Sunday.
Queen Spumante jumped out to an early lead the five-year-old mare would not relinquish, holding off T M Precure and Buena Vista, who left her frantic dash for the line a fraction too late at Kyoto Racecourse.
Queen Spumante, the 11th favorite, covered the 2,200-meter track in 2 minutes, 13.06 seconds to finish 1 1/2 lengths ahead of T M Precure. Buena Vista was a neck back in third.
Queen Spumante gave jockey Hiroyasu Tanaka his first Grade One title and earned ¥90 million in prize money.
“The moment I crossed the finish line, my mind went blank at the thought of me actually winning the title,” said Tanaka.
“Queen Spumante was in good condition and I had confidence. I pulled away from the pack with T M Precure, as I had expected.”
