Second-seeded Jo-Wilfried Tsonga defeated Mischa Zverev of Germany 6-4, 6-3 in the first round of the Japan Open on Wednesday.
The world No. 7 fired 10 aces and converted three of 10 break points en route to victory a day after U.S. Open champion Juan Martin del Potro was eliminated by French qualifier Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
Tsonga will next play fellow Frenchman Richard Gasquet, a 6-3, 6-2 winner over Germany’s Philipp Petzschner.
“It wasn’t an easy match. I’m happy to win today,” said Tsonga.
