Defending champion Yuri Fudo shot a course-record 9-under 63 Friday to take a two-stroke lead after the first round of the Munsingwear Ladies Tokai Classic.
The six-time money leader, who has not won this season, made five birdies on the front nine and added four more coming in on the Mihama Course of Minami-Aichi Country Club.
Fudo hit the green in regulation on every hole, except the par-4 second, where she holed her third shot from 10 yards.
The 32-year-old, now 18th on the 2009 money list, is looking for her 47th career win on the Japan LPGA Tour.
Yukari Baba, Erina Hara and Maiko Wakabayashi tied for second, followed by Sakura Yokomine three shots off the pace.
Shinobu Moromizato, who has won three of the last four events, got off to a slow start with a 73.
Taniguchi takes lead
KITAHIROSHIMA , Hokkaido (Kyodo) Toru Taniguchi had his second straight 67 to hold a two-shot lead at the midway point of the ANA Open on Friday.
Taniguchi, the 2002 and 2007 JGTO money leader, made six birdies against a bogey to reach 10-under 134 on Sapporo Golf Club’s Wattsu Course.
Veteran Tsuneyuki Nakajima shot a 69 to sit two behind Taniguchi.
Eddie Lee (69) of New Zealand, Takashi Kanemoto (70) and defending champion Azuma Yano (71) shared third place at 7 under.
Ryo Ishikawa, who turned 18 on Thursday, was a shot further back after a 70.
Komei Oda and Kenichi Kuboya, who shared the first-round lead with Yano, both struggled to 75s and fell into a tie for 21st at 3 under.
