Struggling ozeki Chiyotaikai informed the Japan Sumo Association on Friday that he has a fractured left rib.
Chiyotaikai has submitted a doctor’s certificate to the JSA that says his injury will require two weeks of rest, sidelining him for the rest of the ongoing training tour that ends April 19 in Tochigi Prefecture.
The 32-year-old ozeki missed Friday’s training session at Tokyo’s Yasukuni Shrine.
Plagued by a left side ache and a rapid rise in blood sugar levels, Chiyotaikai went 2-13 at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament last month, the worst record for an ozeki since the current 15-day tournament system was introduced in 1949.
He will enter the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament on May 10-24 with his second-highest rank in sumo on the line for a record 13th time.
