Blumenblatt wins Mile Championship

Kyodo

Fourth-favorite Blumenblatt made a pulsating charge in the homestretch to pull away from the field en route to winning the Mile Championship on Sunday.

Blumenblatt, a 5-year-old mare, held off a powerful late surge by top-favorite Super Hornet after taking the lead with 100 meters remaining and crossed the line in 1 minute, 32.6 seconds at Kyoto Racecourse.

The victory earned her $100 million in prize money and gave jockey Yutaka Yoshida his first win in the Grade One mile race.

Meiner Rainier took command out of the gate to set the pace while Blumenblatt conserved her energy trailing along the rails in the middle pack before finding an opening. She split horses to sneak past on the inside coming off the final bend before blasting ahead.

Super Hornet ran fiercely along the outside in a last-ditch effort but finished in second, three-quarters of a length behind Blumenblatt. Fine Grain was third.

In an earlier race held at the same track, well-known jockey Yutaka Take sustained a broke arm on a spill when his horse Seiun Ares took the lead, only to buck on the third corner to send Take flying from his mount.

The injury will force Take to miss next Sunday’s Japan Cup race on Meisho Samson.
