Sojourner’s defense pays off

by Ed Odeven

Veteran forward Isaac Sojourner, a mainstay off the bench for the Takamatsu Five Arrows, proved his defensive moxie and rambunctiousness can be game-changing skills in a pair of weekend wins over the Ryukyu Golden Kings. The swat maestro blocked a bj-league season-best nine shots (Five Arrows big man George Leach and Osaka Evessa center Jeff Newton have both had eight-block games) in a 94-75 win on Saturday. He added 15 points, six rebounds and one steal. Sojourner, 32, is the Circle K Sunkus Player of the Week. Sojourner, whose late uncle Willie Sojourner played in the ABA, added 16 points, 10 boards, three blocks and two steals in Takamatsu’s 106-86 win on Sunday, which pushed the team’s record to 19-9, good for second place in the Western Conference.
