Fighters outlast Dragons to extend winning streak to eight


Shinji Takahashi sparked a three-run fourth inning with an RBI double Monday as the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters beat the Chunichi Dragons 7-2 to stretch their winning streak to eight games.

Hichori Morimoto delivered a two-run single in the fourth and a fifth-inning solo homer by Atsunori Inaba off Takuya Asao (3-1) gave Nippon Ham a 4-0 lead at Nagoya Dome.

Norihiro Nakamura hit a two-run homer to pull Chunichi to within two runs in the seventh, but Nippon Ham broke the game open with a three-run ninth.

Ryan Glynn (3-3) allowed two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings. Chunichi fell to second place in the Central League.

Lions 4, Carp 2

At Hiroshima Stadium, Alex Cabrera and Takahiko “G.G.” Sato hit back-to-back homers in a three-run third inning, putting Seibu on the way to its first victory in five games by holding off Hiroshima.

Cabrera connected off Kan Otake (4-4) for his fourth homer in as many games with a two-run shot and Sato followed with a solo drive to back Hideaki Wakui (8-2), who held the Carp to two runs over seven innings to move into a tie for the league lead with his eighth win.

Sato also hit an RBI double that made it 4-0 in the fifth inning. Takahiro Arai had an RBI double and Eishin Soyogi hit a sacrifice fly for Hiroshima.

Hawks 3, Swallows 1

At Jingu Stadium, Fukuoka Softbank handed slumping Tokyo Yakult its sixth loss in seven games with a three-run rally in the fourth that included a Hiroki Kokubo two-run single and a wild pitch by Shugo Fujii.

Yuichi Honda hit a leadoff single and Hitoshi Tamura doubled to put runners on second and third before Kokubo turned the game around with his clutch hit as the Hawks had all three hits of the night in the fourth.

Toshiya Sugiuchi (8-1) limited the Swallows to a run in seven innings of work while striking out 10 and Takahiro Mahara got his league-high 16th save. Fujii (3-6) pitched five innings and took the loss.

Giants 8, Buffaloes 2

At Tokyo Dome, Michihiro Ogasawara went 3-for-4 with three homers and five RBIs as Yomiuri snapped Orix’s eight-game unbeaten streak including a tie and retook the Central League lead with Chunichi’s earlier loss.

Marines 10, Tigers 0

At Koshien Stadium, Takeshi Aono opened the scoring with a second-inning RBI double and hit a grand slam to highlight a seven-run sixth, leading Chiba Lotte to a rout.

Eagles 3, BayStars 2

At Yokohama Stadium, Rick Short tied the game with a seventh-inning two-run single and Yosuke Takasu hit a go-ahead single in the eighth.
