OARAI, Ibaraki Pref. – Katsunori Kuwabara shot a 1-under 70 to take a one-stroke lead over Kim Jong Duck, Tetsuji Hiratsuka and Nobuyuki Okuwa after the first round of the Mitsubishi Diamond Cup on Thursday. Kuwabara, who won the last of his two tour titles at the 1998 Japan PGA Matchplay Championship, had four birdies and three bogeys at the par-71 Oarai Golf Club in Ibaraki Prefecture. The 38-year-old, playing the back nine first, made the turn at even-par and bogeyed Nos. 1 and 5 before reeling off three birdies in his last four holes. Toru Taniguchi and Kiyoshi Miyazato were among the 10 players tied for fifth place at 1-over 72.
