Veteran shooter Michiko Fukushima became the first individual Japanese athlete to win a place in next year’s Beijing Olympics after finishing second in a World Cup meet in Sydney on Tuesday, Japanese shooting officials said.

Fukushima, silver medalist at the 1988 Seoul Olympics, earned a national-record 785.7 points in the women’s 25-meter pistol final, which was won by Chinese world champion Chen Ying by more than five points clear of the 43-year-old Japanese.
