Oikawa zooms to World Cup title

Yuya Oikawa clinched his second straight overall 100-meter title on the speed skating World Cup circuit Sunday when he led a 1-2 finish with fellow Japanese sprinter Joji Kato.

Coming off his 500-meter victory on Saturday, Oikawa crossed the line in 9.55 seconds in the non-Olympic sprint event, holding off Kato by 0.19 en route to his third win of the World Cup season.

Oikawa finished this season’s 100-meter races with 350 points, with Maciej Ustynowicz of Poland second with 247 and Finland’s Pekka Koskela third with 208.

Kato was fourth with 206. In other events held Sunday, Japan’s Sayuri Osuga came second to Germany’s Jenny Wolf in the women’s 100 meters. Osuga clocked 10.46 seconds, 0.18 behind Wolf, who sealed the overall 100-meter title with 390 points. Osuga ranked highest among Japanese skaters in the 100 in fourth place with 220 points.
