Fujita pulls away down stretch

Former Japanese record holder Atsushi Fujita ran unchallenged over the final 4 km to win the Beppu-Oita Mainichi Marathon on Sunday.

Competing in his second marathon in just over two months, Fujita grabbed the lead just before the 38-km mark and easily held off a chasing Atsushi Sato to cross the finish line in 2 hours, 10 minutes, 23 seconds.

It was Fujita’s first victory since he won the Dong-A Seoul International Marathon in March 2002. Sato came home in 2:11:16 while third place went to Kenya’s David Kemboi, who took third with a time of 2:11:26.
