Seiho offense overwhelms Konan

Left fielder Kosuke Kihara and second baseman Satoshi Otsu each had three hits and four RBIs, leading Nagasaki’s Seiho to a 22-3 rout of Fukushima’s Konan in the first round of the National High School Baseball Championship on Monday.

Spring invitational runnerup Seiho led 9-1 through the fifth inning and exploded for 12 runs in the eighth, with everyone in the lineup getting on base and scoring in the frame on the second day of the 15-day tournament at Koshien Stadium.

In other first-round action, first baseman Keiji Yoshimura homered twice and went 3-for-4 with four RBIs as Fukui Shogyo beat Toyama tournament debutant Fukuoka 8-1. Sendai Ikuei ace Yoshinori Sato struck out 11 in a complete-game five-hitter, leading the Miyagi school over Tokushima Shogyo 5-1.
