Japan’s bid to beat European powerhouse Serbia and Montenegro for the second straight day came up short on Sunday, squandering a one-set lead to lose 3-1 in Group A of the men’s volleyball World League.

Yusuke Ishijima and Yu Koshikawa led the attack as Japan carried on with the momentum they got in a straight-sets win Saturday to take the first, only to allow Serbia and Montenegro to come back for a 26-28, 25-16, 28-26, 25-22 victory at Mie Prefectural Sun Arena.

Both teams evened their records at 1-1 after two games in the first round of the World League. Dejan Bojovic matched a game-high with 22 points for Serbia and Montenegro, ranked third in the world. Novica Bjelica added 16 points and Andrija Geric 14 points, while Ishijima had 22 points for Japan.
