The Yomiuri Giants signed free agent right-hander Kiyoshi Toyoda to a two-year contract Sunday in an attempt to bolster their bullpen.
The signing came after Yomiuri held a second round of talks with Toyoda, who was the Seibu Lions’ closer the past five seasons, earlier in the day. The 34-year-old will receive an estimated 230 million yen in base salary next year under the deal.
Toyoda has a 55-35 record with 135 saves and a 2.96 ERA in 11 seasons with the Lions. He led the Pacific League with 38 saves each in 2002 and 2003.
