ST. PETERSBURG, Russia – Japan’s Miki Ando finished runnerup to world champion Irina Slutskaya of Russia at the Cup of Russia on Saturday in her first appearance in this year’s Grand Prix series, while compatriot Yoshie Onda took third for the second time.
Ando, second after Friday’s short program with 60.76 to Slutskaya’s 67.58, skated solidly with a program that did not include a quadruple jump and placed second in the free skate en route to a total of 172.30 points.
“It was a little bit tough for me to skate right after Slutskaya and I could have performed better,” said Ando, who awarded herself 73 points out of 100 a day after giving her short program 93 points.
“I gave top priority to the speed in my skating in today’s routine, so I think I lacked focus somewhat in the fields of choreography and artistic impression,” Ando said.
Slutskaya topped the field for the second straight day and breezed to her second Grand Prix victory this season with 198.06, adding to her triumph at the Cup of China three weeks ago.
