A zoo attendant in Nagano Prefecture was attacked and seriously wounded by a 90-kg lion on Sunday.

According to police and local authorities, the 22-year-old keeper at a municipal zoo in Komoro was bitten in the chest and other areas several times by the 1.8-meter-long feline while cleaning its cage in the morning.

The attendant was taken to a hospital after the attack and is conscious and in stable condition.

City officials said the lion should have been confined to a holding pen behind its cage during the cleaning work. According to the police a door to the pen was left open.

The 15-year-old lion, named Nana, came from Tama Zoo in Hino, western Tokyo, in 2004.
