A high school in Fukushima Prefecture apologized Monday after a teacher repeatedly beat a student in the sumo club.
The male first-year student was injured when the male teacher, who is in his 20s, hit him with a wooden scrubbing brush in May, according to Nihon University Tohoku High School in the city of Koriyama.
On a different occasion, the teacher hit the student in the head with a rubber hammer, slapped him and kicked him, the school said.
Separately, a coach for the club made the same student do push-ups over an upturned saw blade. The coach, who was a part-time worker, has quit.
The student's parents complained to the school in July and he was transferred to a different school.
At a general meeting of students on Monday, school principal Hiroyuki Matsui apologized and pledged to prevent a recurrence, according to its vice principal. The meeting was closed to the media.
The sumo club was suspended indefinitely from Monday. The school said it will explain the situation to its members' parents Thursday.
