Restaurants in Japan took up the highest number of spots for two years running in an annual ranking by the French government of 1,000 outstanding eateries around the globe.

A total of 116 restaurants in Japan appear in "La Liste," a ranking based on data from online review sites and hundreds of guidebooks. This is the second ranking since the project was launched last year.

By country, France followed in second with 113 restaurants, and China — including Hong Kong and Macao — came in third with 100 restaurants listed.

The restaurant that won the top spot was Guy Savoy in Paris, followed by Kyo Aji in Tokyo, up one notch from last year, and Le Bernardin in New York.

Two other restaurants in Tokyo made the top 10 — Kyubey in Ginza at fourth and Joel Robuchon in Yebisu Garden Place at ninth.
