A taxi rammed a hospital in the city of Fukuoka on Saturday, killing three people and injuring at least seven, the police said.

Tatsuo Matsuoka, the 64-year-old driver, was arrested at the scene.

The taxi, which was devoid of passengers, slammed into Harasanshin Hospital in Hakata Ward shortly after 5 p.m., crashing through a window near the entrance and careening into a lounge filled with people before hitting a wall, according to the hospital.

The floor of the lounge was covered with broken glass and parts from the taxi. An eyewitness told Kyodo News that the driver appeared to be in a state of confusion after the accident.

The hospital has 359 beds and is about 2 km from Hakata Station.
