Elementary and junior high schools in Tottori Prefecture opened as normal Monday following Friday's magnitude-6.6 earthquake, but some prefecture-run high schools were closed.
The Meteorological Agency has called on the public to stay alert as seismic activity is still continuing in the area.
In Kurayoshi, one of the worst-hit municipalities, Kenichi Kasami, principal of Ogamo Elementary School, said he was "happy" that classes were being held but added he was worried some students would not attend classes.
Some elementary and junior high schools in the city were not able to provide lunches due to damage to a school lunch service center.
Evacuees in Kurayoshi and Hokuei were still taking shelter in 15 elementary, junior high and special education schools.
To cope with the vast number of buildings that were damaged in Friday's quake, the prefectural government has begun accepting inspectors from outside the prefecture to evaluate the risk of damaged structures in those two municipalities as well as in the towns of Yurihama and Miasa.
As of Monday morning, 45 shelters were accommodating a total of 656 evacuees, according to the prefecture.
