The following is a chronology of major terrorist attacks that have occurred overseas since 2001 involving Japanese nationals.

Sept. 11, 2001: 24 Japanese are killed in the al-Qaida terrorist attacks in the United States.

October 2002: Two Japanese are killed in bombings in Bali, Indonesia.

November 2003: Two Japanese diplomats are ambushed and killed near Tikrit in northern Iraq.

October 2004: Militants linked to al-Qaida kidnap a Japanese man. His body is later found in Baghdad.

October 2005: One Japanese is killed in bombings in Bali, Indonesia.

November 2008: One Japanese is killed in terrorist attacks in Mumbai.

January 2013: 10 Japanese are killed in hostage crisis at a natural gas plant in Algeria.

January 2015: The Islamic State militant group posts messages online indicating that two Japanese were beheaded.

March 2015: Three Japanese tourists are killed in a museum in Tunisia as gunmen storm it.

October 2015: One Japanese is shot dead in Rangpur, northern Bangladesh.
