Two people are in comas following heavy rain in Kyushu on Tuesday and Wednesday, which triggered landslides in Kagoshima and Nagasaki prefectures.

According to the Meteorological Agency, 61.5 mm of rain per hour was reported in Kanoya, Kagoshima Prefecture, on Wednesday morning, following 263 mm of rain that fell in a 24-hour period up to 12:40 p.m. Tuesday.

An office building in the city of Kagoshima was hit by a landslide, and a man in his 40s was buried. He was rescued, but remains unconscious.

The city of Tarumizu in Kagoshima Prefecture issued an evacuation order Wednesday for 70 residents in 38 households.

The city of Uto and the village of Minamiaso in Kumamoto Prefecture also issued evacuation orders.

A woman in her 50s living in Aira, Kagoshima Prefecture, was buried alive in a landslide that occurred Tuesday and completely destroyed her house. She was rescued about an hour later, shortly after 3 p.m., but remains unconscious, police said. Her sister, also in her 50s, managed to escape by herself, they said.

In Ofunagura in the city of Nagasaki, five houses were damaged by a landslide and a man in his 70s was partly buried. He was rescued but had suffered injuries in the incident, police said.

Kyushu Railway Co. said some Kyushu shinkansen trains either stopped operation or were delayed in Kagoshima and Kumamoto due to heavy rain Wednesday.

The agency said the heavy rain was expected to continue Wednesday and warned of landslides and floods, as well as the possibility of tornadoes.
