Taiwan and Japan will establish a dialogue mechanism for cooperation on maritime affairs, according to the island's Executive Yuan, or Cabinet.

Cabinet spokesman Tung Chen-yuan said Monday that following bilateral negotiations, both sides agreed to set up the mechanism under the framework of the Association of East Asian Relations, Taiwan's Foreign Ministry-linked agency tasked with handling ties with Japan in the absence of formal diplomatic ties, and the Interchange Association, Tokyo's de facto mission in Taiwan.

"Both sides have tentatively agreed to hold the first round of dialogue before the end of July," he said.
