Ritsumeikan University on Saturday cancelled classes and lectures at all six of its campuses after receiving a bomb threat over the Internet.
The private school, based in Kyoto, also banned access to its facilities, citing the need to ensure student safety. Ritsumeikan has branches in Ibaraki, Osaka Prefecture, and Kusatsu, Shiga Prefecture, as well as Tokyo.
Ritsumeikan officials said they learned of the threats from the Kyoto Prefectural Police last week. The threats, posted on Internet bulletin boards, also suggested bombing the offices of municipal governments nationwide as well as Kokushikan University in Tokyo.
Ritsumeikan has a student body of about 35,000. On Saturday, classes and free adult education lectures had been planned.
