Emperor Akihito has been diagnosed as having contracted influenza, the Imperial Household Agency said Monday.

With symptoms including a fever of 37 to 38 degrees, sore throat and mild cough, the Emperor, 82, plans to rest at his residence in the Imperial Palace in central Tokyo, according to the agency.

He has had cold-like symptoms and a fever since Saturday evening and was diagnosed as suffering from the flu Sunday evening, officials said.
