Blustery blizzard scrubs 1,000 Chicago flights

A powerful storm moving through parts of the U.S. Midwest on Wednesday has caused the pre-emptive cancellation of hundreds of flights in and out of Chicago.

Airlines have cancelled more than 1,000 flights in or out of the city’s major airports, O’Hare and Midway.

Powerful winds blowing off of Lake Michigan could help to bury the area in up to 18 inches (45 cm) of snow.

The winter weather warnings from the National Weather Service also stretched southwest through all of Illinois and into Missouri.
