Oft-arrested abusive Fukuoka pair this time killed goldfish, allegedly forced daughter to eat 30

A Japanese mother forced her teenage daughter to eat more than 30 of her pet goldfish as a punishment, police and media alleged, as the country grapples with a record number of child abuse cases.

Yuko Ogata and her boyfriend, Takeshi Egami, who have both been arrested, made the girl eat the dead fish in June, police told AFP on Wednesday, adding that the daughter was allegedly abused on a daily basis.

Local media said the couple, who live in Fukuoka Prefecture, killed the fish by pouring detergent into their tank.

The girl was then forced to eat more than 30 of the fish one by one, according to the Nippon Television Network.

No damage to the daughter’s health has been reported, according to local media.

Ogata and Egami were reportedly indicted last year for tying the daughter to a bed with rope, punching her in the face and burning her tongue with a lit cigarette.

The latest arrest was their fifth since last year in relation to abuse of the child, reports said.

The case is just the latest in a string of such shocking incidents in Japan.

Last month, a 3-year-old girl died after her mother deliberately poured boiling water on her, causing serious burns to her face.

Police arrested the mother and her boyfriend for negligence in caring for a child.

According to the health ministry, Japan’s child protection centers dealt with a record 89,000 abuse cases in the year ending last March.

Japan is also struggling with abuse against the elderly.

A former nursing home worker was arrested on Monday for allegedly throwing an 87-year-old resident from a balcony to his death in 2014.

Local media reported that the suspect also admitted killing two more residents in their 80s and 90s by throwing them from balconies in the same year.

Child abuse happens globally and there are terrible cases where protective services fail in their duty but it is truly shocking that these vile specimens of humanity have been allowed to repeatedly torture this poor girl, daily, with the blessing of the courts, who have time and again failed in their duty to protect her.

This suggests a fundamental and systemic failure to protect children from appalling abuse, and every single citizen of Japan should hang their heads in shame for what their nation has allowed to happen to this girl. All Japan’s economic leverage, technological prowess and rich culture isn’t worth a damn if you can’t be bothered to protect your children from being tortured in this manner.

This is a supposedly first world developed nation whose judicial and welfare system has failed completely in its most basic duty. Everyone involved in this case, including those who presided over the court cases, should be named, shamed and sacked from their positions, as they are clearly not capable of doing their job and protecting children.

In a civilised society, the girl’s parents would never be allowed near a child again, any child, following lengthy prison sentences, and certainly not allowed to return home with their child to torture her, over and over again. If the mother ever again fell pregnant, her child would be removed from her at birth for its own safety.

This is inexcusable, and wherever it happens it should lead to immediate and effective changes in child protection services, assuming Japan actually has a system of child protection.

Her teachers and all of those who treated her many injuries should also feel ashamed that they didn’t intervene more effectively. This girl will carry her mental, emotional and physical scars with her throughout her life, and those who did not intervene as good as boiled the water they poured on her and lit the cigarette they burned her tongue with. If they have nightmares about that, they deserve to – just imagine what that girl’s life was like, every day and every night, waiting for whatever novel form of torture her parents could think of next.

I would love to see a tide of domestic public anger about this case demanding and ensuring a change in the system of child protection, as proof that the Japanese people really do care about children. Anything less would be frightening.

That isn’t what happened. The girl was put into other care when the couple was arrested in Sept. of last year. They have stayed in detention since then, and been repeatedly rearrested on various other charges, as police have gained knowledge of what happened and when. They have neither gained their freedom, nor custody of the girl in between the five arrests. All the instances of abuse happened before their first arrest back in Sept.

Thank you for clearing that up. I’m going to withdraw the original comment.
