Sony game unit SCE to change name in April

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCE) will change its corporate name to Sony Interactive Entertainment LLC, or SIE, in line with its integration with another Sony Corp. group company on April 1.

The word “Interactive” was adopted as part of the name to reflect the commercial importance of online entertainment services.

SCE was formed in November 1993. The other company set for the integration is Sony Network Entertainment International LLC, which sells games and distributes movie and other content on the Internet. It was founded in April 2010.

“By integrating the strengths of the PlayStation’s hardware, software, content and network operations, SIE will become an even stronger entity,” SCE President Andrew House said in a statement issued Tuesday.

House is scheduled to assume the post of SIE president.

SIE will have its headquarters in California to put emphasis on game operations in the huge U.S. market. SCE is based in Tokyo.

SCE launched the first-generation PlayStation console in 1994 and game operations have become one of the core business areas for the Sony group.

The latest model, the PlayStation 4, was released in 2013. Cumulative global PS4 sales have reached some 35.9 million units.
