Japan to hold ceremony to mark fifth disaster anniversary

The government decided Friday to hold a memorial ceremony in Tokyo on March 11 to mark the fifth anniversary of the powerful earthquake and tsunami that hit the northeastern part of the country in 2011.

The ceremony has been held annually since 2012. The government has established a preparatory office for the ceremony at the Cabinet Office.

Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko will attend the ceremony, which will be held at the National Theater in Chiyoda Ward, as well as others including family members of victims.
