Police arrested a 24-year-old man in Kumamoto Prefecture on Sunday on suspicion of killing a 3-month-old boy with powerful kakuseizai stimulant, police officials said.

The suspect, Tensho Yoshimura, allegedly gave the drug to the baby, Yushin Nishida, on Sept. 4 at a so-called love hotel in the city of Kumamoto, where he checked in with the baby's mother.

Kakuseizai is an addictive drug whose main ingredient is amphetamine or methamphetamine.

The police declined to disclose whether Yoshimura, charged with murder and violating the stimulants control law, has admitted to the allegation. Authorities, however, said he was not the baby's father.

The mother made an emergency call from the hotel saying that her son had stopped moving and was frothing at the mouth. The baby was taken to a hospital but later died.

After the incident, Yoshimura and the woman were arrested and received suspended sentences for using stimulants.

Authorities said the women, a single mother, was not involved in giving her baby the stimulant.
