Food shortages, fears of air raids and discrimination were part of daily life for a Korean woman and her family in Kobe during World War II.

Pyo Hae Sun came to Japan to work when she was 14 years old, as there were far fewer opportunities in Korea at the time, she said.

After working at a spinning factory in Aichi Prefecture, Pyo moved to an area that is now part of Nagata Ward in Kobe to marry a Korean man at 18.
