Sumitomo Corp. said Monday it has received a ¥36 billion order from Turkmenistan’s state-run power firm to build a gas-fired thermal power plant.
The major trading house said it hoped the order for the 400-megawatt plant will strengthen its electricity business in Central Asia.
Construction of the plant 600 km northeast of Ashgabat, the country’s capital, will start before March and is slated to be completed in 2018, Sumitomo said.
To complete the deal, Sumitomo President Kuniharu Nakamura accompanied Prime Minister Shinzo Abe during his visit last week to Turkmenistan.
Sumitomo and the Turkmen utility signed the contract after Abe met with President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov on Friday.
