Guatemala mudslide death toll now at 264, with 40 still missing

Forty people are still missing following the mudslides outside Guatemala City that killed 264 people on Oct. 1, a spokesman for search and rescue workers said Saturday.

“At this time we have 264 bodies and are continuing to search for 40 people who are still missing,” said Julio Sanchez, spokesman for volunteer firefighters and other rescue workers at the site of the disaster.

Search and rescue efforts were to continue through the weekend, but officials have said they will meet Monday to determine when to end the operation.

The disaster occurred in the town of Santa Catarina Pinula, some 15 kilometers (9 miles) east of Guatemala City, leveling some 200 dwellings.
