Five people died and 56 were injured after a fire tore through a factory of a Mandom Corp. subsidiary in the outskirts of Jakarta on Friday morning, the Japanese cosmetics maker said.

The fire at the PT Mandom Indonesia factory in Bekasi city in West Java, was extinguished about an hour later. Media reports said the fire started as production was underway in a gas-filling line where hair spray and other products are manufactured.

Authorities said they have information that a gas pipe at the factory may have exploded.

Construction of the factory had just been completed last month. Mandom built the 498 billion rupiah (about ¥460 million) facility to serve as a key production center for Asia, where demand for cosmetics has been surging.
