Some of the Republican Party's presidential candidates reacted angrily to the U.S. Supreme Court's ruling on Friday to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, despite a shift in public opinion in recent years toward acceptance of it.

Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker, who is among more than a dozen people seeking the Republican nomination for the November 2016 election, called the court's decision a "grave mistake."

"The only alternative left for the American people is to support an amendment to the U.S. Constitution to reaffirm the ability of the states to continue to define marriage," Walker said in a statement, one of many swiftly sent out by Republicans.
