An Egyptian university set up in partnership with Japan to promote research and education in science and technology held a ceremony marking its fifth anniversary on Wednesday.

The Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology (E-JUST) opened in Alexandria in 2010 with postgraduate programs in eight engineering fields covering such subjects as robots and solar panels.

About 150 Egyptian students are studying at a temporary campus in an Alexandria suburb. The instructors are sent from Japanese institutions such as Kyushu University, Kyoto University, Waseda University and the Tokyo Institute of Technology.

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the government's aid disbursement body, is backing the university, which is expected to launch four-year undergraduate programs in September 2017 with enrollments of around 8,000 students.

The university was set up in February but the ceremony was timed to coincide with a council meeting this month.

At the event, JICA Vice President Kiyoshi Kodera, who also sits on the university's board, said E-JUST has a major role to play at a time when the need for higher education in science and technology is growing worldwide.
