Okinawa Gov. Takeshi Onaga will visit Washington and Hawaii from late May to convey local opposition to the relocation of the Futenma military base within his prefecture, prefectural government officials said Monday.

During his trip from May 27 to June 5, Onaga will seek to meet with senior U.S. government officials as well as members of the armed services committees of both houses of Congress, according to the Okinawa officials. Onaga will be visiting the United States for the first time since becoming governor in December.

His itinerary is expected to include visits to the State Department, the Department of Defense, Congress and a think tank in Washington. In Hawaii, Onaga is arranging to meet with Gov. David Ige, a third-generation Japanese-American who assumed the post in December, the Okinawa officials said.
