Airports, trains and expressways in Japan continued to be packed on Wednesday as travelers returned from their spring getaways on the last day of the Golden Week holiday period.

Reserved seats on shinkansen trains bound for Tokyo were nearly fully booked in the afternoon, according to East Japan Railway Co. and Central Japan Railway Co.

Domestic flights to Tokyo's Haneda airport were also almost fully booked, Japan Airlines Co. and All Nippon Airways Co. said.

Traffic on the Kan-Etsu Expressway in Saitama Prefecture was backed up for 13 kilometers, according to the Japan Road Traffic Information Center.
