Bullet train service on the Tohoku Shinkansen Line in eastern and northeastern Japan was suspended for about 4½ hours on Wednesday due to a power failure caused by a broken overhead line in Fukushima Prefecture, East Japan Railway Co. said.

Services on the Akita and Yamagata Shinkansen lines connecting to the Tohoku line were also suspended, affecting about 30,000 passengers including Golden Week holiday-makers.

A total of 63 shinkansen train services were delayed and 34 services were canceled.

A broken line was found near Koriyama Station after the power failed at around 11:30 a.m. The train service resumed at around 4 p.m.

A shinkansen train stopped shortly after passing Koriyama Station around the time the power failed. The railway operator is examining whether there is a relationship between damage to the train and the broken power line.

About 550 passengers on that train had to walk along the track for about 500 meters to Koriyama Station. Nobody was injured in the incident.
