The Abe administration decided Tuesday to extend Japan's trade embargo and other unilateral sanctions against North Korea for two years.

The decision reflects the lack of progress in North Korea's reinvestigation into the fate of Japanese citizens it abducted in the 1970s and 1980s, including Pyongyang's failure to produce an initial report on the probe.

The sanctions had been set to expire April 13.
