Myanmar police have begun seizing pirated copies of Sony's film "The Interview," a comedy about a fictional plot to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, with media saying the move followed pressure from the North Korean Embassy in Yangon.

The provocative comedy that triggered a devastating cyberattack on Sony Pictures in the U.S. made an unprecedented online debut after hacker threats prevented its wide release on Christmas Day.

The English-language website of newspaper The Irrawaddy said the North's embassy had urged "proper action" by the Myanmar government to immediately halt the copying, distribution and sale of the film in Yangon, Myanmar's commercial hub.
