Police have arrested a Sagamihara, Kanagawa Prefecture, man for allegedly seriously wounding a woman by stabbing her repeatedly on a street Sunday.

Atsushi Takeda, 51, who is unemployed, faces a charge of attempted murder. He allegedly stabbed the 29-year-old victim, a nearby resident, in the neck, chest and back, apparently with a knife, according to the police and fire department.

The victim's condition was not life-threatening, officials said.

A witness in Minami Ward called police at around 2:55 p.m. Sunday to report that a woman had been stabbed by a man, who subsequently walked away.

The victim told police the man was a stranger.

The fire department said the woman sustained at least seven wounds.

The attack occurred in a residential area about 500 meters northwest of Odakyu Sagamihara Station.

"I heard a loud scream for help, dashed out the house and saw the victim sitting on the ground, and so I did what I could for her wounds," a woman in her 60s said prior to Takeda's arrest. "It's scary, because it's usually a quiet neighborhood."
