The government is considering compiling an extra budget of only ¥3 trillion for fiscal 2014 ending in March to prevent the economy from drooping further from the consumption tax hike in April, sources close to the matter said Friday.

The extra budget compiled for fiscal 2013 totaled ¥5.5 trillion.

The supplementary budget might allow the economy to recover enough for the second stage of the hike, which will complete the doubling of the consumption tax to 10 percent next October. The first stage raised the 5 percent levy to 8 percent on April 1.
