Typhoon Halong weakened into an extra-tropical depression Monday in the Sea of Japan after claiming 10 lives and leaving two others missing.

The Meteorological Agency called for vigilance as the season's 11th typhoon spun northward after the downgrade, dumping rain and strong winds on Hokkaido.

Torrential rain fell Monday morning on Rishiri Island off Hokkaido's northwest coast and in the town of Shiriuchi, with hourly precipitation reaching 49.5 mm and 43.0 mm, respectively.
