Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida said Sunday he had an informal exchange with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Su Yong and suggested that he urged Pyongyang to conduct a thorough investigation into the abduction issue and to exercise restraint with regard to further missile launches.

Speaking to reporters after a regional security summit in Myanmar's capital Naypyitaw, Kishida said he "exchanged words" with Ri and "conveyed Japan's views on the (North's) recently launched special investigation committee (on the abduction issue) and security issues such as nuclear and missile development."

Kishida declined to reveal details about what appears to have been an informal meeting, except that he "exchanged views" with Ri during an intermission of the 27-member ASEAN Regional Forum, Asia's biggest security gathering.
