Sony Corp. said Thursday its group net profit in the April-June quarter rose more than eightfold to ¥26.81 billion, thanks to strong sales of game consoles and the yen's depreciation.

Consolidated operating profit surged 96.7 percent to ¥69.81 billion on sales of ¥1.81 trillion, up 5.8 percent on year.

For the full business year ending next March, Sony left its group net loss projection of ¥50 billion, against a loss of ¥128.40 billion last year.

The company is expecting a consolidated operating profit of ¥140 billion, up 428.4 percent from the previous year, on sales of ¥7.8 trillion, up 0.4 percent.
