Three New York law enforcement officers were wounded Monday in a shootout in Manhattan with an individual who was killed in the exchange of fire, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly after noon in the heart of the West Village, setting off a massive police response and the closure of nearby streets.

“From what we know at this point, it appears that the injuries to the officers are not life-threatening,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said.

New York Police Commissioner William Bratton said the wounded were a police officer and two U.S. marshals.

“There was some sort of encounter with an individual who was with a firearm and as a result of that the individual is, I believe, deceased,” Bratton said.

NBC News reported that the officers were trying to arrest a man wanted in a sexual assault case, but he resisted and opened fire, triggering the shootout.
